Nigma-e live in Montreuil, Théâtre Berthelot, november 2010, filmed by Igor Juget :

Nigma-e is a show with three performers - digital and physical instruments - and the video :
it explores the interplay between music, images and light ; between the programmed and the improvised.

At the crossroad of free improvisation, electro, drum'n bass, contemporary music,  jazz, fusion, these improvisers use bass, percussions and objects, and digital instruments controlled by wii or other remote controls or by motion detection - there is no mouse or laptop on stage ... - as well as interactive video :  an amazing instrumentarium, to magnify the complicity in this collective game with light, sound, motion, pulse, image.

The video ( the fourth improviser ... ) responds to parameters that are real-time extracted from the musical signal ; or, the sound treatment responds to motions that have been detected by a webcam ; or, bassist and drummer are facing a gestual instrument that seems to manipulate their sound … Here, everything is live performed in real time, and all the programs are home-made.

« … Elaborate our instruments, is a good way to remain in the spontaneity of improvised music, its emotion, its brilliance, still incorporating video as the fourth character.

We are connected to each-other on two levels : the normal musical and visual interplay, and the various programmed interactions ».

Melting arts ...

Nigma-e comes from a reflection about the melting of our arts – improvised music, interactive video, real-time sound treatments - to achieve creation for the stage.

Seaking for new and exciting feelings, we conceive and develop treatments and modes of interplay, that provide a true potential for expressivity in the improvised playing with music and images.  This means, creating programs, and tame them just like instruments.

The purpose might be to make our visions come true, finding aesthetic answers to the question of interplay, when machines are involved, and when we want to create our own tools and expand our techniques.

Hubert Dupont

Hubert Dupont explores the secret and tortuous paths of creative music - improvised or premeditated - with passion... He has performed in Helsinki or Vancouver, as well as Dakar or New York, or at the Cairo Opera ...

Hubert Dupont is the double bass player of KARTET (since 1990 with Benoît Delbecq, Guillaume Orti, Chander Sardjoe), and the electric bass player of THÔT, Stéphane Payen's band ; in 1993 he co-founded Collectif HASK; he led the bands ALTISSIMO (1994-99) and DECOR (1997-2000).
His double-bass solo CD Ultraboles (UBR 0501) was named "Revelation 2005" in Guitarist-bass, and followed by many performances.
He leads Dupont T, inviting Rudreh Mahanthappa, with Yvan Robilliard and Chander Sardjoe : the CD Spider's Dance (2007, UBR 0502, dist. Nocturne) is followed by tours in France, in the US and Canada.
He also co-leads Sawadu, a trio with Hervé Samb (Guitar, Senegal) and Brice Wassy (drums, Cameroon).
His musical experience is strongly oriented towards musical research as well as receptivity to new forms : from formal constraints to total improvisation ; from pure acoustic to pure electronic. In 2006 he created Blitz Party, a show with interactive video (Eric Vernhes) and electro music (Stéfanus Vivens) and ... two chess players !.
He also performed with writer-teller Louis-Michel de Vaulchier.

In contemporay jazz and new improvised music he also performed with Robin Eubanks, Steve Lacy, Harold Land, Glenn Ferris, Stefano Di Battista, Fabrizio Cassol, Daunik Lazro, Magic Malik Mezzadri, Nelson Veras, Mathias Rüegg, Paolo Fresu, Wolfgang Puschnig, Gabor Gado, the Big Band Quoi De Neuf Docteur (directed by Serge Adam), La Marmite Infernale, ARFI, Hasse Poulsen, Dominique Pifarély, Louis Winsberg, Laurent De Wilde, Nicolas Genest, Pierre Vaiana, Marjolaine Reymond ... and, out of jazz, with Elie Maalouf, Youssef Hbeisch, Fodé Diop, Kamilya Jubran, Saeid Shanbeh Zadeh…

Tom Mays

Composer, digital interpreter and teacher – a pretty advanced specialist in digital interfaces for musical expression : he is associated professor at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris (New Technologies for composition).

He programs real time sound and video processing, which he performs, through wii remote control or other tools - especially the Da Fact "Karlax" which he contributes to tune-up and develop.

He obtained the Bachelor of Arts at University of San Jose (California) and moved to France, where he founded Studio Césaré at Reims with Christian Sebille ; he made musical environments for creations by composers invited by the IRCAM, and took part in numerous musical adventures, as a composer or interpreter, with fellowships and commissions by studios and organisations such as La Muse en Circuit, Le Cirm, Césaré, La Grande Fabrique, le G.E.P.S (Rennes), Radio France, la Filature (Mulhouse).

He collaborates with Michel Portal , Michaël Lévinas , Philippe Fénelon , Luca Francesconi , Ivan Fedele , Luis Naón , Georges Aperghis , Jean-Luis Agobet , Martin Matalon, Pascal Contet, Carol Robinson, Wu Wei, Xavier Rosselle, Jérôme Noetinger, and choregraphers/dancers Olivia Grandville and Milena Gilabert.

He is mainly intersted in instrumental games of real time computer, written or improviseed music, and relations between music and image.

Renaud Rubiano

Toma Gouband

Percussionist, improviser, sound seaker ... he uses and combines drums, stones, branches, bells, pens, cymbows, all kinds of objects - and even the wind - into a unique musical world, ground breaking and highly poetic.

One of the animators of the european avant-garde improvised and timbral musics, he performed all over Europe with Nelson Veras, Michael Moore, Harmen Fraanje, Tobias Delius, Benoit Delbecq, Kim Myhr, Magic Malik, Nils Ostendorf, Brice Soniano, Clayton Thomas, Guillaume Orti, Ernst Reijseger, Fredrik Ljungkvist...

Three CDs of his project "Par 4 Chemins" (Cristal Records / Abeille distristribution) : trio with Harmen Fraanje and Brice Soniano (P4C1), quartet with Magic Malik (1RDR) and quartet with Michael Moore.

Flashback ....

In 2006, Hubert Dupont created the show Blitz Party, with electro musician Stefanus Vivens and video artist Eric Vernhes : already, interaction between sound and image, ... thus, a chess game is played on the side of the stage, connected to the music and video system and trigging changes that guide the improvisers …

With drummer-percussionnist Eric Groleau, he founds in 2007 Nigma-e, dedicated to free improvised music, to melting with other arts, exploration of other techniques and artistic horizons.

The meeting with Tom Mays was a turning point - a new start.
Tom develops and performs digital instruments for 20 years, incorporating image in his musical work for 10 years. In 2002 he was granted by DICREAM to continue this work, with programs such as Max/MSP and SoftVNS.
